A short time ago on the “Dr. Oz Show”, part of the show was devoted to chiropractic care. First Dr. Oz spoke about the benefits of chiropractic care and then chose a woman in the audience who had a back issue and wished to be “chiropractically adjusted “. Dr. Oz ,then utilizing a large scale model of a “spine” explained to her and to the studio and television audience how the spine worked and different ways people could develop back problems. Dr. Oz then had a Chiropractor comes out to the stage. After introductions were made, the Chiropractor then asked some questions of the prospective patient regarding her condition. After a determination of the patient’s condition and where the adjustment should be made, the doctor then proceeded to adjust the patient on an adjusting table, to the satisfaction of the patient. Obviously the whole process was edited for television. Aspects of a patient coming to a Chiropractic Physician for the time ,such as the patient’s history, health background and the comprehensive examination were not shown. But what pleased me about this program was the matter of fact way Dr. Oz went about explaining and demonstrating a chiropractic adjustment, and the reasons for such a treatment. There was no cloud of sensationalism or skepticism attached to the program. The profession of Chiropractics has been in existence for approximately 115 years. Literally, tens of millons of people have been suscessfully treated in the USA and around the world. As a Chiropractor , it was very gratifying to see the primary component of our” treatment system”, the chiropractic adjustment, performed on mainstream television without the negative connotations that are sadly sometimes shown in print and media. Until the next time. Dr. McGee

In a football game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets on August 24 Jets quartback Mark Sanchez took a hard hit and was later removed from the game. Afterward in an interview with ESPN’s Michele Tafoya Sanchez said: “I sure got hit tonight . It didn’t feel good. I saw the chiropractor right away, but it feels a lot better obviously and that ‘s the way you want to bounce back…” As just one example of a top flight athlete seeking chiropractic care after a tough game or athletic activity, chiropractics has been an integral part of the American sport scene for many decades. Chiropractic doctors have been part of the official Olympic ” doctor ” team since 1980. I personally ,first read in a sports illustrated article in the mid 70′s about a chiropractor Dr. Perry, who was treating high jumper Dwight Stones , who at the time was an Olympic medalist and world record holder. In the same article Cuban runner Alberto Juanturana was also featured as an athlete who was being treated by Dr. Perry. Alberto was the only athlete in Olympic history to win gold medals in the 400 meter and the 800 meter race in the same Olympic games. In the article, both athletes praised Dr. Perry as a health practioner

I have had every intention of writing this blog sooner this season but I have been too busy shoveling snow. ha ha. Sorry ! Well first of all, if you plan to go out and do some shoveling do a warm up first. Some light stretching for a few minutes could go a long way in preventing muscle pulls . When you are about to begin shoveling ,consider your age and physical condition before you begin. We all have limitations and while shoveling snow could bring back memories of being a teenage dynamo who could shovel all day, chances are those days are in the past. Once you are outside , all warmed up from your stretching exercises , shovel in hand ,in layered clothing and ready to begin…. look at the snow. If it is heavy, icey, packed down etc…. you probably want to break it up with your shovel before you pick it up. When you pick up the snow you want to focus on using your legs and back in conjunction with your arms as you pick up and throw the snow. Think of it as a team effort, arms, shoulders legs and back working together to pick up and move that darn snow. When you are about to throw the snow off to the side, turn your whole body.Twisting your upper body while leaving your feet stationary could put excess torque and strain on your back. If you have to carry the snow on your shovel for any distance before you throw it, slide your hand down the handle so that you are holding the snow closer to your body. That makes it easier to carry and relieves the strain on your arms. Take frequent rests and drink plenty of water. Snow , snow everywhere, but the air is dry in the wintertime and it is easy to get dehydrated. As you are moving along in this strenuous activity, chances are you have no time constraints. So take your time , pace yourself, take an occassional water break .. then get ready for the next storm!

In my last blog I left you with a question. What is one of, if not the most responsive organ in the human body to nutritional supplementation? The organ I am referring to is the human heart. The heart is on a 24/7 work schedule that never quits. The heart is essentially one large muscle which contracts in order to pump blood throughout the rest of the body. Over time, if the heart does not receive the nutrients it needs in order to function at an optimal level, it becomes weak and flaccid. Exercise is one of the essential components needed to strengthen the heart, but you also need to ingest the correct nutrients along with exercise in order to really make the heart a strong and healthy organ. Eating good , nutritious foods such as fruits, vegatables, nuts, seed and lean meats will certainly go a long way in making the heart stronger. But if an individual has suffered an illness or is taking multiple medications, both of which will rob the body of vital nutrients ,then the heart is probably literally starving for the nutrients it needs in order to function. Some examples of these nutrients are Co-Enzyme Q10, B complex vitamin and magnesium. But to do it right you need a “game plan ” just to borrow an expression from sports jargon. This is where consulting with a health professional who can tailor an exercise and nutritional program to your specific needs is recomended. I can be contacted by email at info@mcgeechiropractic.com for those of you who are looking for a consultation pertaining to a an exercise and nutrition program aimed at developing a strong and healthy heart.

Awhile back I was discussing nutrition , more specifically supplementation with a patient when he commented that his primary health care provider said that the only thing that taking vitamins was good for was making expensive urine. At first blush I was a bit taken back by that comment. But as I thought more about it, I realized on some level that observation has some merit. No matter what substance we humans put into our mouths, whether it is food, nutritional supplements or drugs, prescription or over the counter, how much of that substance we absorb depends on many factors. One of the major factors which comes to mind is age. As we grow into middle age our bodies produce less digestive enzymes and stomach acids which are responsible for breaking down any substance we eat or swallow. The more unprocessed and natural a food is, such as an apple as opposed to a cupcake, our bodies will break it down and absorb its nutrients more easily. That’s because the apple has enzymes as part of its makeup which works in tandem with our digestive system to break down the apple and absorb its nutrients. Processed food does not have any inherent enzymes so our bodies have to work harder to break down this food and absorb what little nutritional substance they have. In regards to nutritional supplements, how we absorb these products also depends on the quality of the product. Even a high quality synthetic supplement has limitations on how much of the product we can absorb and utilize. These type of supplements are so large in their quantity because, in the best of circumstances we absorb a relatively small percentage of the supplement. For example , a fifty year old male taking a 1500 mg calcium supplement on a daily basisis is probably only absorbing a small percentage of that mineral depending on the type of calcium, his own personal health and other factors. Whole food supplements , which are literally derived from real foods are more compatible with our digestive system and therefore can be in smaller quantity and are absorbed more easily. All substances that we ingest that we do not absorb are excreted and eventually work their way into our waterways and oceans. This is especially unfortunate for some marine life ,which has been shown to be adversely affected by exposure to medications and drugs which are rapidly accumulating in the world’s waters. There are numerous factors involved in properly advising someone regarding a nutritional program. I have seen too many patients walk into my office with an armload of supplements that they have randomly bought like the flavor of the month. Factors such as age , gender , and health goals all must be taken into consideration when planning a nutritional supplement program for a patient. Remember , not all supplements are made equal. One of the services I offer in my office is nutritional counciling. I will leave you with this question which I will answer in my next blog. What is one of , if not the most responsive organ in the human body to a proper nutritional supplementation program ? Until the next blog !

The past 12 months have been very good for the chiropractic profession in terms of data supporting the efficacy of chiropractic care: The Wellmark pilot study suggests that chiropractic care reduces costs and need for surgery. : The Milliman USA analysis that concludes,” Spinal patients who seek chiropractic coverage have materially lower health care costs than those who do not .” The Consumer Reports reader survey that found “hands on” therapies, led by chiropractic care, were the top rated treatments for back pain sufferers, with chiropractic receiving the highest satisfaction with care ratings significantly higher than MDs. The ” Mercer Report” that suggests chiropractic compares favorably to most therapies covered by health plans and is ” likely to achieve equal or better health outcomes”. The final report on the Medicare demonstration project , which notes that 87 % percent of patients surveyed gave their DC a satisfaction score of 8 or higher and 56% percent gave a perfect 10.5. A survey analysis published in the June 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine revealed that 60% percent of U.S. adults utilizing CAM therapies for back pain reported” a great deal” of benefit. Chiropractic was used most frequently ( 74 percent of respondents) and had the highest suscess rate ( 66 percent reporting significant benefit).

Detoxification….. Most folks, when they hear that word think of people who are alcohol or drug addicted going to a “clinic” for rehab. But the detoxification I would like to speak about today is unfamilar to a lot of people. The fact of the matter is that over the last 30 to 40 years there have been thousand of chemicals invented for various uses which we are exposed to on a daily basis. I would also include in this list of toxins we are exposed to metals, air, water and soil pollutants. To be more specific, pesticides used to treat our crops and fertilize our flowers and lawns, chemicals used to treat our furniture, mercury in our seafood and carried in the air from industrial uses such as coal burning plants. Think of anything you put in or on your body such as shampoos, moisturizers, sunscreens and makeup. The list is almost endless. Collectively, year after year your body is absorbing these substances, many of them to varying degreee have been proven toxic and detrimental to your health. The good news is that your body has built in features which function to excrete these toxins from your system. Your liver, kidney, lungs and skin as some of the main detoxifying organs of the body do a very good job. But as with many aspects of modern living which we humans were never designed for, your system is probably in a state of toxic overload. What can we do ? Well, you can exercise more. Through perspiration and rapidly induced breathing we detoxify our system. Also make sure you are ” regular “. Daily bowel movements keep toxins from ” hanging around ” too long in our system. Indoor pollutants are a growing problem. Keep lots of houseplants such as english ivy and ficus to clean and detoxify your home. Nutritional supplements such as chollella have been shown to bind to metals stored in your body and excrete them along with a bowel movement. Be proactive, read the labels of any products you use on your body to determine if the ingredents in that product are considered safe for your health. For a more comprehensive nutritional detoxification program, consult a health practioner who is knowledgeable in this area of health. For more information on this topic and other nifty health information, a two good websites to peruse are www.naturalnews.com and www.hsibaltimore.com For help in getting yourself on a good detoxification program call 617-846-4553 or fill out a contact form
